"Youth-Generated Culture: Education in an Era of Social Media"

with danah boyd

Social Media Researcher at Microsoft Research New England and Fellow at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society

Many of today's youth are embracing a wide array of social media as part of their everyday lives. From social network sites to texting to blogs, many youth are leveraging the power of social media to create, communicate, share, and learn. Yet, what they're learning may not be what educators are trying to teach and just because social media is pervasive does not mean that all youth are "digital natives." Social media introduces many opportunities for education, but also many pitfalls. In this talk, I will examine what it is that youth are doing with social media and why before moving on to talk about the implications for schools and universities. Topics addressed will include sociality, learning, privacy, and inequality.
