SUMMARY:Brown CS Dept. Colloquium - Data-driven grasping and manipulation
DESCRIPTION:\\"Data-driven grasping and manipulation\\"Nancy Pollard\, Carnegie Mellon UniversityData captured from human performances of activities ranging from the everyday through the extraordinary has become widely accessible over the past 10 years. The ability to download or capture human motion and process it in real-time has led to many new algorithms and new ways of thinking about character animation and robot control. However\, we do not yet know how to make the most effective use of this data. What is important about a given performance? How can it be modified to create realistic new scenarios? And what are the limits of this approach.can we ever create behavior that could be called dexterous from a collection of observed performances? In this talk\, I will focus on the problem of creating dexterous grasping and manipulation behaviors from observed performances. I will discuss how my ideas have changed over the past decade\, as we have gone from the idea that a grasp is made up of contact points between the hand and object through consideration of the hand geometry\, anatomical constraints\, and dynamic properties to the observation that grasps often involve preparatory sensing and manipulation actions which we have shown can reduce the effort needed to acquire an object. Results in computer animation and robot control\, as well as results from controlled human subjects experiments will be presented.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2384/brown-cs-dept-colloquium-data-driven-grasping-and-manipulation

SUMMARY:Brown CS Talk - Global Connectivity for Mobile Devices
DESCRIPTION:\\"Intuitive Global Connectivity for Personal Mobile Devices\\"Bryan Ford\, MIT...The Unmanaged Internet Architecture (UIA) is a suite of design principles and experimental protocols that provide robust\, efficient global connectivity among mobile devices while relying for configuration only on simple\, intuitive management concepts. UIA uses \\"personal names\\" rather than traditional global names as handles for accessing personal devices remotely. Users assign these personal names via an ad hoc device introduction process requiring no central allocation. Once assigned\, personal names bind securely to the global identities of their target devices independent of network location. Each user manages one namespace\, shared among all the user&#39\;s devices and always available on each device. Users can also name other users to share resources with trusted acquaintances. Devices with naming relationships automatically arrange connectivity when possible\, both in ad hoc networks and using global infrastructure when available. We built a prototype implementation of UIA that demonstrates the utility and feasibility of these design principles. The prototype includes an overlay routing layer that leverages the user&#39\;s social network to provide robust connectivity in spite of network failures and asymmetries such as NATs\, a new transport protocol implementing a novel stream abstraction that more effectively supports the highly parallelized and media-oriented applications demanded on mobile devices\, and a flexible security framework based on proof-carrying authorization (PCA) that provides \\"plug-in\\" interoperability with existing secure naming and authentication systems.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2589/brown-cs-talk-global-connectivity-mobile-devices

SUMMARY:Brown CS Dept. Colloquium - Computational Bio-Molecular Modeling
DESCRIPTION:\\"Computational Bio-Molecular Modeling and Analysis for Drug Discovery Chandrajit Bajaj\, University of Texas at Austin Human functional processes are mediated through complicated biochemical and biophysical interactions amongst proteins\, and other biomolecules. A comprehensive computational model and analysis of these interactions\, provide important clues for developing therapeutic interventions related to infections and disease. In this two part talk I shall first describe a combination of image and geometric processing algorithms to efficiently reconstruct spatially realistic structural models of target proteins\, that are culpable in the spread of viral infections. Next\, I shall introduce a new class of algebraic surface spline finite elements\, and the use of irregular fast Fourier estimation methods in the very rapid computation of protein binding energetics\, essential for drug screening analysis and discovery.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2590/brwn-cs-dept-colloquium-computational-bio-molecular-modeling

SUMMARY:Brown CS Talk - Precision Integrated Scalable Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:\\"Precision-Integrated Scalable Monitoring\\" Navendu Jain\, University of Texas...In this talk\, I will define precision as a new unified abstraction to realize the goal of system introspection. I will first present our work on designing and building PRISM\, a scalable monitoring service that makes precision a first-class abstraction. PRISM quantifies (im)precision along a three-dimensional vector\: arithmetic imprecision (AI) and temporal imprecision (TI) balance precision against monitoring overhead while network imprecision (NI) addresses the challenge of providing consistency guarantees despite failures. Then\, I will describe how our implementation addresses the challenge of providing these metrics while scaling to a large number of nodes and attributes. Finally\, I will demonstrate how the unified precision abstraction enables new monitoring applications by presenting experiences from three applications we have built.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2591/brown-cs-talk-precision-integrated-scalabled-monitoring

SUMMARY:Computational Molecular Biology Lecture
DESCRIPTION:\\"Exploring Microbial Diversity using Metagenomics\\" Shibu Yooseph\, Venter Institute\, Rockville\, MD...We present our findings on shotgun sequence data generated from samples taken by the Sorcerer II Global Ocean Sampling (GOS) Expedition. These data reveal the incredible diversity and heterogeneity in naturally occurring marine microbial populations. Over 6 million proteins are predicted in the GOS data. Besides nearly doubling the number of current proteins\, the GOS proteins add a great amount of diversity to known protein families and shed light on their evolution. The GOS proteins cover nearly all known prokaryotic protein families. In addition\, a large number of novel protein families are also predicted from these data. Several protein domains that were previously categorized as kingdom-specific\, have GOS examples in other kingdoms. Our analysis indicates that we are still far from discovering all protein families that exist in nature.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2592/computational-molecular-biology-lecture

SUMMARY:Computational Molecular Biology Lecture
DESCRIPTION:\\"Predicting Evolutionary Trajectories in Sexual Populations\\" Daniel Weinreich\, Ph.D.\, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, Center for Computational Molecular Biology\, Brown University...I will describe a novel definition of the adaptive landscape appropriate for this problem\: the vector field reflecting the joint pressures of mutation\, selection and recombination over a continuous multidimensional space that represents both allele frequencies and linkage disequilibrium among alleles. Populations are again regarded as occupying a temporal succession of points in the underlying space\, and I will illustrate the potential of this approach by describing how recombination influences a population&#39\;s evolutionary trajectory single- and multi-peaked fitness models.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2593/computational-molecular-biology-lecture

SUMMARY:Brown CS Talk - Low dimensional representations of High dimensional data
DESCRIPTION:\\"Learning low dimensional representations of high dimensional data\\" Fei Sha\, University of Pennsylvania...In this talk\, I will focus on my research that have brought new and interesting developments into the frameworks of NMF and LDA. In the first project\, I show how to extend the original NMF approach to learning meaningful \\"audio parts\\" from speech and audio data. The audio parts robustly encode harmonic structures in the voices\, which are key acoustic features for building machines that can analyze complicated acoustic signals as well as human listeners. In the second project\, I investigate how to incorporate supervisory information like class labels in LDA models. In the supervised LDA\, topics are discovered by grouping words based on not only semantic similarity but also class label proximity. These topics yield compact representation with better predictive powers than those derived from the original unsupervised LDA...
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2598/brown-cs-talk

SUMMARY:Computational Molecular Biology Lecture
DESCRIPTION:\\"Computational Problems in Human Genetics\\" Gad Kimmel\, University of California\, Berkeley The question how genetic variation and personal health are linked is one of the compelling puzzles facing scientists today. The ultimate goal is to exploit human variability to find genetic causes for multi-factorial diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease. Recent technology improvement enables the typing of millions of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for a large number of individuals. Consequently\, there is a great need for efficient and accurate computational tools for rigorous and powerful analysis of these data. In my talk I am going to concentrate on two computational problems\, which are an essential step in studying the data obtained by this technology\: Accurate and efficient significance testing with a correction for population stratification and estimating local ancestries in admixed populations.
http\://rinexus.com/calendar/2601/computational-molecular-biology-lecture
