Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education comes to life for over 400 elementary and middle school students from across the state as they go head-to-head in the Rhode Island FIRST LEGO League CLIMATE CONNECTIONS Championship Tournament on January 10, 2009.

45 FIRST LEGO League teams in Rhode Island spent the last 8 weeks exploring one of today's most critical issues: the climate, while creating a robot to solve missions on a game board that simulates real-life climate issues. At the action-packed tournament, teams compete in two-and-a-half minute matches to earn points as their robots complete missions on the playing field that's made entirely of LEGO elements.  In
morning judging sessions, each team presents a research project that highlights what they've learned about the climate to a panel of volunteer experts from the community. Along the way, they've not only learned about design, programming, and scientific research, but they've also gained valuable hands-on experience in creativity, teamwork, communication, and project management.

Teams, comprised of up to 10 students ages 9-14, vie for awards in categories such as Robot Design, Robot Performance, Research Quality, and Teamwork.  The team earning the highest cumulative score across all judging categories wins the coveted Champion's Award and earns the honor of competing alongside 80 teams from 24 countries at the FIRST LEGO League World Festival.
