Registration is now open for the Bryant University New England Entrepreneurship Conference, to be held from 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 through 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, on the University's campus, 1150 Douglas Pike.

The event, sponsored by the Bryant Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization, the country's top chapter, offers practical interactive experiences for students in the Northeast who are studying entrepreneurship and people who participate in entrepreneurial-based organizations. Workshops will be taught by experts in the fields of new venture creation, traditional and online marketing, and financial management.

The conference also includes:

Keynote speakers Mark Hellendrung, CEO of Narragansett Brewery; Susan Rittscher, president and CEO of Center for Women and Enterprise; Duane Spires, president of Extreme Youth Sports;
Build-a-Brand competition: Teams will receive materials to create a unique product for the beverage industry. The teams will be required to brand the product by making strategic decisions about the name, packaging, distribution area, costs, and promotional items. Teams will pitch their brand to a panel of judges that includes H. Shahidi, former Pepsi-Co executive; Jon Mason, CEO of SwingJuice, and Miguel Dominguez, CEO of Avant Tea.

New England Premiere screening of Linotype: the film, followed by Q&A and discussion on making the film with director Doug Wilson.

Linotype: the film is a feature length documentary centered around the Linotype type casting machine. Called the "eighth wonder of the world" by Thomas Edison; it revolutionized printing and society. The film tells a surprisingly emotional story of the people connected to Linotype and it's impact on the world.

Presented by AIGA RI, with sponsorship from Monotype Imaging, Sprintout and Schoolyard. Special thanks to AIGA RISD student group and AIGA RI Members for their ongoing support.

New Year's resolution to make more PGD events? If so, or even if not, celebrate the start of 2012 with the folks from ecoRI News at their world headquarters (111 Hope Street, Providence) this Thursday!

Come see for yourself where the environmental magic happens. Local brews provided by Newport Storm will be on hand along with Yacht Club soda for those of you currently on the wagon. Additionally, we are hoping to secure a bottle or two of local whiskey from Sons of Liberty, RI's first whiskey distilery. Wine will also be served. Dave Fisher, world renowned chef/ecoRI reporter will be preparing the appetizers and finger food for the event. We hope you will be able to make it!

As you may know from reading this posting twice monthly (featuring a side blurb on them) ecoRI News is Rhode Island's environmental news source. They are a nonprofit journalistic initiative devoted to educating the public about the causes, consequences and solutions to local environmental/social justice concerns. ecoRI is a professionally-staffed, Web-based news agency focused on issues that impact the Ocean State.

The Providence Green Drinks monthly gatherings (always held on "Thirsty Third Thursday") provide a great opportunity to meet with people in the area who are personally and/or professionally interested and involved in a variety of environmental, conservation, and sustainability issues. It's an informal and fun time and usually draws an eclectic group of several dozen people over the course of the evening.

Our next Providence Drupal Meetup will be on Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00pm at Lullabot's Activity Center (150 Chestnut St, 3rd Floor, Providence, RI). We’ll be kicking back with food and drink in their swanky cool space. Parking is free on and off street (starts at 5 pm). Drinks and mingling starts at 6, so come early!

We're playing co-host with our friends the Providence Web Application Security Group and Greg Knaddison, Acquia's Director of Security Services (aka Head of Drupal Security) will be giving a talk 'live via sattelite' (ok, Skype). The title of the presentation is "Drupal as a Security Vendor". He will show the methodology that is used in Drupal for handling security issues and comparing/contrasting with how other similar projects do it. Greg has said that this presentation will be more "OWASPy" than "Drupaly".

Greg won't actually be in attendance, we'll be trying out a "virtual" presentation where Greg will present live from Denver over a Skype connection.

Don't let the techy topic fool you - this is a great conversation about just how much is done in Drupal to counteract the 'Open Source means insecure' FUDdle that is so often thrown about when suggesting Drupal as a platform on client projects.

Digital Meets Physical Hardware Hackathon

Startup Accelerator Betaspring is teaming up with the Netduino team to host Digital Meets Physical, the most kick-ass hardware hackathon in Providence, RI on January 28-29. Digital Meets Physical will bring makers, software hackers, and DIY geeks together for two days of outrageous fun, using the Netduino platform and other fun toys to build our brains out.

We'll be hacking at the AS220 Labs, a hackerspace where tools, technology and inspiration abound. With no less than 10 top quality watering holes within spitting distance, power breaks and refueling will be done in Providence style (that is, deliciously).

Never played with the Netduino? This open source electronics platform uses the .NET Micro Framework and features a 32-bit micro controller and a rich development environment that's fully open to users. Use the design files and sample projects to learn and be inspired, then remix 'em until you get what you want, how you want it.

Need more? Kippkitts will be on hand as a sponsor to provide their open source hardware kits for the hackathon. Kippkitts enable devices to heat, cool, measure, move, and control things around you. KippKitts products currently include low-voltage, high-efficiency vapor cycle heat pumps, remote controlled battery powered solenoids, high-power PID servo actuators, and Netduino compatible shields for motor control, temperature management, lighting control, wireless interfaces, among other cool things.GreenGoose will also be sending some of their just-launched sensors for hacking. Prior to MIT, Ms. Tonti was vice president, executive director Vanguard, a global marketing and advisory service for senior executives.

She's one of Mobile Marketer’s “Mobile Women to Watch for 2011” and served on the board of the Harvard Business School’s Cyberposium. In 2000, Ms. Tonti received the Governor’s IT Achievement Award for Rhode Island. She was selected as a regional finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the year award for 2002. She attended the University of Cincinnati and holds advanced degrees in computer science and mathematics and a B.S. in biological sciences.
