Any Chatter from URI?
Posted on October 10th, 2007, by Brian
I notice numerous events and discussions involving Brown every week but I never see anything from URI. What is URI up to? Lectures? Spinoffs? Interesting research not quite at the angel investment stage?

Submitted on October 12th, 2007 - 3:30pm linkCoincidentally, there was an event announcement yesterday...here's the beginning of the press release:
"KINGSTON, R.I. – October 12, 2007 – The University of Rhode Island will host a public forum to discuss the results of a report on the feasibility of establishing a research and technology park adjacent to URI’s Kingston campus. The forum will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 2:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the URI Memorial Union."

The post to the URINEWS mailing list yesterday was the first I'd heard of it.

Submitted on October 12th, 2007 - 4:02pm linksweet, thanks for the heads up! It sounds interesting especially as I've been seeing all those articles lately about URI's tech exploits. (ex: http://rinexus.com/news/987/ur...)
I posted it on the calendar too (http://rinexus.com/calendar/14...).

ORCAS Net, which is a sensor array in the bay, and SubChem's work on autonomous underwater vehicles with onboard chemical sensors are the two that spring to mind. I'm sure there are others.
Also, Bob Ballard's Inner Space Center is a big experiment in telepresence, pulling in video and data feeds from scientific surface ships and subs across the world, then relaying, or store-and-forwarding them, to high schools, colleges, aquariums, and other learning centers.
