Maybe I'm just jealous that I live and work in Pawtucket and won't be able to be part of your district. But when you want to innovate, you better make sure you know who your audience is. Most designers are going to run screaming after seeing that homepage, shake their heads, and think to themselves that Providence is using designers like they used artists during the "Renaissance". Pretty soon their cool loft-style digs in the Jewelry District will be too expensive to live and work in, and more Bostonites who think Providence is "funky" will snatch those spaces up.
Ok, this is a tear, I know. It's easy to rip things apart online like this. If you want to involve the creative community, I just hope that you are prepared for criticisms like this. Though I may sound harsh, I am pretty sure I am not the only one who is skeptical of City government getting involved in promoting ONE sector of the workforce for the gain of all. Did you even talk to the group that is already promoting design nationwide, the AIGA? There is a strong RI chapter that should be involved in most of what your Design District is proposing.
Anyway, good luck with the district. It's a tough task to unite creative people.

Rock on.

We go online officially June 15th... Under Construction Until Then.
This is a Private business and it's goal is to bring Commercial Design Business to Providence Design, Marketing, PR & Communications companies.
Inspired by "Mad Men" of Madison Ave. along with the concept that a district can help promote far more than any individual business.
And lastly, to quote Gob Bluth from "Arrested Development" the FOX TV Show...
"Come On! Providence!" Get your act together design businesses and raise your standards!"
"Come On!"

We want to include all commercial designers, we are just starting from the center and moving outward. We had to start somewhere. FYI - The Providence Design District is a private business locally owned and operated not associated with government, schools or universities in the City or national designer associations like - AIGA - although they are welcome sponsors - All!
To explain... we entered the 2009 RI Business Plan Competition this year for "The Providence Design District" and earned an "Honorable Mention" - the website was a quick design to show competition judges the scope of the project and business idea. We kicked off Monday, April 13th. Our site is still "Under Construction" until June 15th. But also note, we don't plan to be a dazzling flashy website, our design district members - who will we will promote - will be the real razzle and dazzle!
Highchairdesign your expertise, comments & membership are all welcome!
Already the discussion is moving forward with these posts and more discussion about stories and regular news events with the Providence Business News.
Finally, it is a tough task to move creative people. I am hoping that my years of experience with association marketing and communications will make a difference.
The true success of this venture will be when Providence - maybe the last "Great City in the World" realizes that ...
"Providence & RI Design is Just as Good and Better than Some!"

Submitted on May 21st, 2009 - 4:18am linkTony - We all Love the razzle dazzle, exclamation marks and "quotation marks"! But not sure that "Providence & RI Design is Just as Good and Better than Some!" is the most inspiring quote for one of the top design communities in the country. I have a "feeling" that it's not how they'd want to be marketed to the rest of the world.
Also - I think the standards are actually very high among the local design community - which is why you may have a tough time doing business with them in this context unless they are proactively engaged and fully understand the value of what you are proposing. ("!")
FYI - if you google : providence design - Tony's forum post and eventual website link are a 4th stop for potential new residents, visitors, investment, etc. interested in the providence design community to see. !!

-Why is a mission statement for "designers" or "a design district" difficult to read?
-Would typographers and font-o-philes be okay with a "design district" document that uses that font?
-If the mission statement begins "We the Designers of the City of Providence," why is there only one signature? Were other designers contacted?
