Wordpress Devs / Users
Posted on January 11th, 2009, by chempel
Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of work with WP lately and it has really started to grow on me. I'm curious to see how many local WP devs and users we have out there so we can exchange ideas / tips / techniques.
What are some of the best plug-ins out there? What should be developed to further extend WP?

I'm a big WordPress fan as well. I use it on a bajillion sites. I'm not a huge plugin guy (actually had my site running plugin-free for quite a while). I kinda love theming though... taking that XHTML/CSS 1-pager and turning it into a full-fledged theme. I plan t do a demo of the process at NewBCamp (and I just released my first WP theme).

I have quite a few unfinished themes sitting in a folder named 'FARM' just waiting to grow up into a finished theme (all in due time...). I'll try to be there for the NewBCamp demo as I'm sure I will learn some new techniques like I did from your CSS techniques post.

We use wordpress for www.seedprovidence.com and www.officelab.us and have been using Buddypress for our backend social blogging community on the officelab site. Still in Beta and has some issues to get over... but is evolving pretty quickly into an awesome platform to integrate and feature multiple blogs and give entrepreneurs (in our case) a way to promote their companies and expertise with the world and connect with members without having to be facebook friends.. I would say it is becoming more of a competitor with ning and kickapps-type platforms than facebook/linkedin - but allows for much more customization and potential integration with openid or DandyId.
Two things that would be big in the buddypress user community:
1. plugin allowing any user to create and register events ala Facebook. Especially if it integrated as a community calendar.
2. plugin integrating openid or DandyId - it is doable.. just takes some time and php

It could also be taken a bit further to where local professionals could jump on board to provide advice or tips and techniques. Certainly seems like a promising up and coming app.
