Werewolf (a.k.a. Mafia)

matt.gillooly

One of my favorite (and completely unexpected) experiences from SxSW was being exposed to the game Werewolf.  Not only is it a lot of fun, but it turns out to be a great way to get a group of people talking and inadvertantly networking.

A number of folks I met there were from a group in Portland, OR that has monthly Werewolf meetups.  Would anyone here be interested in meeting up in Providence for an occasional game?

Killing hapless villagers?  Bloodthirsty werewolvian rampages?   Count me in!

I first heard about Werewolf from Jason Fried when he came and spoke last year . I think he had recently played it at Barcamp or something. Anyway he was raving about the game, and saying we should get a game going here sometime. Sounds like it might be a good idea.

Matt, did you have a plan in mind?

matt.gillooly

matt.gillooly

What?  Me?  Plan?  I thought you knew me better than that, Jack. =P

I'll find us a venue and moderate the first few rounds, as long as a few more folks jump on board soon.  Realistically, we need at least 8 people to play, so I'm trying to find at least 12 who are interested and would try to make it.

I'm out of town for Web 2.0 next week, but maybe we can get a crew together around the beginning of May.  Anyone who wants in should post a comment here so I know to follow up with you.

This guide to the game goes into more detail and answers a few questions I had after reading the first link. I'm ready to play. This will be a lot of fun to try out.

your url does not work. :(

Here's a URL, lists some variations at the end. I like the "cupid" variation.

Thank you, k00k. I'd tried to post that link earlier but apparently lacked the technical skills.

i was editing a post in safari and it did the same thing to my link. so i guess it's mildly possible that it wasn't your fault.

Alright, let's make this happen...

I've marked off a few evenings I'm free on http://www.when2meet.com/?8149-pGzna.  Y'all can log in and specify the times that you're free as well, and it'll let us know when we have the greatest cumulative availability.

Sometime around this Wednesday, April 23, I'll pick a time that works well for the group and post it here.

Venue-wise, I think it would be awesome if we could get Jake's to reserve us a couple tables on their patio, so I'll call about that once we have a time picked.

Objections?  Suggestions?  Concerns?

I'll come.

Cool, Matt. I'm in, although I'm finding When2Meet pretty confusing. How about you either suggest a couple of times here or just choose one?

I'd love to play. Let me know what time you pick!

JackTemplin

Ideally, how many folks would we want? (Trying to determine how widely to announce this.)

k00k

k00k

I'm thinking a dozen would probably be good...we could always have multiple groups if we had more.

matt.gillooly

matt.gillooly

We had a room full of close to 30 people (mostly newbies) going at one point in Austin. So, I'm not very worried about having too many people... the biggest limitation will be the size of the space we find (and to a lesser extent the number of people willing to take a turn moderating).

It's easier for me if folks would try to get when2meet working, but if it's acting weird, feel free to post in this thread which of the following evenings work for you:

  • Sunday, April 27
  • Wednesday, April 30
  • Friday, May 2
  • Saturday, May 3

Again, I'll pick the time based on this feedback, and post the decision here tomorrow or Thursday.

Okay, folks, let's make this happen at 6pm on Wednesday, April 30th.  I'll try to reserve the space for us in the next few days... if you're planning to attend and haven't posted in this thread, please do so, so I have a better headcount.

JackTemplin

That time works for me, Matt. If you need any help on venue ideas/contacts, let me know.

I'd like to come, but I may have to stay at work until 6, so I likely won't be able to play (unless latecomers are allowed to play) ... at any rate, I'll come and hang and watch.

Latecomers are, in fact, allowed to play!!!

I am going to be a werewolf and go single-mindedly after Jack.

Bring it, Michelle. I've blocked out tomorrow afternoon to file my teeth.

Matt, How many are we up to so far?

matt.gillooly

matt.gillooly

k00k - It looks like we'll have around 15 people so far, which is actually the perfect number for the bar's sake.  It's not enough that we'd split into 2 groups, so we'll have some pretty long rounds... people that get eliminated early in each round will have plenty of time to work up a good bar tab!
