Description
AS220 is a community of artists based in downtown Providence that provides open forums and opportunities for Rhode Island artists. We provide an alternative to the institutional venues and have gained national attention for our commitment to an "open and unjuried", egalitarian approach to nurturing a creative community.
The activities of AS220 include (but are not limited to) daily events in our performance space, monthly gallery exhibits, a number of annual events and festivals, the Broad Street Studio community learning center, and the on-going operation of several "cottage industries" such as our Darkroom, Print Shop, and Labs. AS220 currently owns and manages two 22,000 sq foot buildings in downtown Providence that house 26 artists and provide individual and collaborative work spaces, galleries, venues, and our bar and restaurant.
In September 2010, AS220 will double it's footprint and bring a third building on line; The Mercantile Block which is located next to the Dreyfus on Washington St. This building will house 22 residential studios, expanded facilities for our Labs and Print shop, work studios, as well as commercial and not-for-profit tenants.

The AS220 Labs VISTA is responsible for developing a business plan, systems and practices that will support the Labs projected growth into new facilities.
Duties Include:
Administrative
- Develop and implement short term and medium term business plan (1 year and 3 year).
- Work with Managing Director on developing and maintaining budget.
- Financial record keeping.
- Coordinate payments to contract workers and vendors.
Communications
- Work with communications director to maintain mailing and e-mail lists for the Labs.
- Advertise workshops and special events.
- Build a marketing strategy for the Labs based on input from keymembers and AS220 Administrative staff..
- Cultivate increased usage through outreach events and by building relationships with other non-profits organizations, businesses, colleges and schools.
Education and Programing
- Work closely with Cottage Industry Coordinator to schedule classes and workshops on a regular, quarterly basis.
- Coordinate interns and assistantships.
- Collaborate to manage Fab Academy Program.
Space/Technical
- Manage physical space
- Coordinate shop scheduling and programming
- Create and enforce standard systems of usage for labs equipment, including cleaning and maintenance procedures and the creation of user manuals for labs members.
- Maintain on-line reservation system for lab usage and develop new systems for streamlining management.
- Implement and teach health and safety procedures to exceed state and national standards.
- Manage Inventory and supplies.
Resource-Raising and Cottage Industries
- Work with development director to develop a fund raising plan and the implementation of an annual/biennial fund raising event for the labs
- Attend and help organize open meeting of labs “Key Members”
- Attend Monthly Cottage Industry Meetings with other program leaders and help develop “crossover” classes and events.
- Build systems for “earned income” contract jobs for labs and labs members.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
- Experience with business planning and budget administration.
- Experience community building including building systems for managing members and volunteers and implementing outreach efforts.
- Experience with fund raising strategy and implementation.
- Experience working in a shared technical labs type of facility.
- Familiarity with Labs equipment and a background in electronics, hardware/software and/or programming.
AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a $4,725 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a $1,200 stipend after completing their service.
