Description
The Communications Specialist advances the work of the Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President for Research, crafting and disseminating external and internal messaging and producing multimedia content. The specialist manages and improves the Graduate School and OVPR websites, handling day-to-day oversight and contributing to the overall redesign of both sites, working with the Director of Communications and other partners to improve the look, content, and navigation of both sites. The specialist will take the lead for both offices in social networking, digital photography, and maintenance of an image archive. S/he will write and edit content and coordinate with other Brown offices to promote University research and training. The specialist will also prepare executive-level briefing materials, talking points and PowerPoint presentations. Other core duties include data collection, analysis, and presentation for program-evaluation and reporting purposes, as well as event publicity, communication, registration, and production of materials (print and online) for Graduate School Orientation, Commencement, OVPR special events, and other event planning and evaluation tasks. This is a new, one-year position that reports to the Communications Director.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a distinct advantage. The ideal candidate will have four to eight years experience in communications, preferably in higher education, including at least two years of experience managing Web-based projects or creating multimedia marketing programs. We’re looking for proven project-management skills, with hands-on experience in managing Website design strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and oral and written communications skills, as well as a proven ability to conduct research, gather and organize data, and present findings. S/he will also have the ability to conceive and produce visual content to support messaging; a portfolio is highly desirable. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Photoshop are required. Proficiency with Cognos is highly desirable.
