RI film & TV writers walk the picket line
Disputes over payment for content on internet, cell phones, iPods, and other digital formats at heart of strike
Full Story: Proposed pilots are in limbo, as are the writers who create them Source: Providence Journal, January 13th, 2008 Added on January 12th, 2008 at 1:24 pm, by Judy HeThe writers’ strike has disrupted the careers of several writers who have lived, worked or gone to school in Rhode Island.
[Gina] Gionfriddo, born in Washington, D.C., graduated from Brown University’s master’s program in playwriting in 1997, and lived in Providence until 2005, when she got a job writing for Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Last year she moved to the original Law & Order.
“…the strike is really about the Internet. I don’t see a dime, for example, from iTunes, and I can’t tell you how many people tell us they saw our episodes there. That’s where all our work is going. I think TV is eventually going to go away,” she said...
...In 2000, [Elle] Triedman, who also grew up on the East Side of Providence, was the only Rhode Islander on the writing staff of NBC’s Providence, the drama set in its namesake city, but mostly shot in Los Angeles. Now Triedman, who lives in Los Angeles, is walking the picket line while the fate of a miniseries she submitted to Lifetime remains in doubt.
“Twenty years ago, we gave away the farm on DVDs,” she said, “we don’t want to get burned again."
