Gypsii adds real-time tracking to social networking

Facebook-compatible mobile app unites location information with digital media for real-time, real life sharing

...The site is called Gypsii and relies on the use of a mobile phone to track your whereabouts in order to use its unique features. Users can install the Gypsii software on their phones and then use it to share their locations with others through the site and also associate media with what they are doing at those locations–a feature known as PlaceMe. A friend will then be able to see where you are in the world and what you are doing through photos, video, and messaging.

Another feature of Gypsii is called SpaceMe. This allows you to look up where your friends are in relation to you. You can also choose to locate other Gypsii members who aren’t friends, but who are in your area and filter them by interest. The SpaceMe feature is optional, however, preserving at least some of your privacy...

...There are two methods used to locate exactly where you and your mobile phone are at any time in the world. The first is via a GPS chip built-in to some of the more advanced phones. Failing that, triangulation is used by communicating with local base stations and calculating where you are. The accuracy of the location is thought to be within 30 meters of the specific position of the phone...

Matthew’s Opinion

...From Gypsii’s point of view, there is a lot of scope for services. If user numbers grow significantly, then advertisers will surely want to get on the service. Rather than just telling users where there friends are, you may also start to see other icons on a map such as restaurants and get on the spot offers if you go there.

Would anyone be comfortable giving this service a go? I can see it being used in limited form–e.g. track Sal around a technology show. You could also use it on a holiday–uploading all the media from the locations you have visited as a sort of map of memories. Having it going everyday with your whole life tracked is a step too far, though.
