URI, Twin River hit as data breaches rise in ’08

The University of Rhode Island, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence and the Twin River slot parlor were among the local organizations where sensitive data was compromised in 2008, according to a new report.

The number of data-security incidents reported nationwide increased 47 percent in 2008 from the prior year, according to the study, which was released last week by the Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit that helps victims of data theft.
