URI develops 'smart' barcode to warn of spoiled food

The University of Rhode Island today announced the development of a "smart" barcode that will tell consumers and grocers if food has gone bad.

URI said its patent on the barcode could produce hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.

The barcode was developed by a partnership of two URI chemistry professors and a food safety company, SIRA Technologies.

The university said that the barcode works through an ink that is nearly invisible, but which turns red when spoiled. The color change also keeps the barcode from being scanned at the checkout counter.
