Business student from Cranston devises social Web site with campus cachet

For Jay Rodrigues, of Cranston, it all started when he began getting Facebook invitations from his teachers while he was a student at The Wheeler School, in Providence.

Not that he had anything against his teachers, said Rodrigues, now a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of business. But he always thought that Facebook, the hugely popular social networking Web site, was devoted to students. To hear from teachers on the site was … uncomfortable. So Rodrigues started thinking about creating a spot for college students only.

He came up with DormNoise, a calendar-based Web site designed to help college students organize their busy lives. DormNoise has been operating in a test, or beta, mode since August; it is now open to all college students, at www.dormnoise.com. Rodrigues said any student with a valid college e-mail address ending in .edu can register for free.
