Americans’ spending on travel and tourism has plummeted in recent months, falling at an annualized rate of 22 percent in the last three months of 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The sharp pullback has squeezed airlines, cruise ships, hoteliers, restaurants and a host of other vacation-dependent industries.

But not all of them. Travel insurance is proving to be, if not recession-proof, at least recession-resistant. At Warwick-based IMT Services Corp., which owns travel insurance site InsureMyTrip.com, sales of policies dipped last fall but since then have stabilized.
