WHEN THE JOURNAL wrote in its May 4 editorial (“Bigger than EDC”) that Saul Kaplan “spouted fashionable buzzwords while the state’s economy collapsed,” it was not only mistaken, it did a great disservice to those who are growing their businesses through the kind of transformative innovation that Kaplan championed during his tenure at the EDC.
Saul Kaplan was one of the hardest-working agency directors in Rhode Island’s history, as shown by The Journal’s coverage of Kaplan’s tenure. Several dozen stories showed a plan out front on economic development issues dealing with infrastructure, education, business climate, entrepreneurship, and yes, innovation. Rarely did a day go by that Kaplan was not out in the community, talking to businesses and civic groups, meeting with executives and making every effort to be transparent and accessible.
