John Kostrzewa: R.I. has economic opportunities, if lawmakers seize them

Rhode Island continues to sink deeper into recession.

But there have been several encouraging developments in the last few weeks that give state leaders a base on which to start a recovery that can be built into a new economy.

They are the Federal Aviation Administration’s endorsement of a runway extension at T.F. Green Airport, Brown University’s decision to open a medical school in the Jewelry District in Providence, the growing interest in alternative energy, including wind power, and the promised reorganization of the state Economic Development Corporation.
