The panel searching for a new executive director of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is ready to move forward now that new legislation clears the way for several crucial changes at the agency.

Alfred J. Verrecchia, the head of the search committee and Lifespan chairman, said last week that naming a finalist had been held up by bills involving the EDC that were awaiting General Assembly approval.

Of particular importance was a measure that allows state officials to offer the next executive director a three-year contract, ensuring that the new director will remain even after Gov. Donald L. Carcieri’s second term ends in 2011.
