Close to 200 business and political leaders turned out Friday to meet Rhode Island’s new economic-development director, Ioanna T. Morfessis, who has pledged to work with them to energize the state’s sickly economy.

If the turnout was any indication of the mutual commitment, that partnership could be off to a good start.

But what happens next will determine whether Morfessis is successful in turning around the oft-criticized Economic Development Corporation and breathing life into the business climate.
