NY Times identifies PVD-based Swipely as a potential challenge to Amazon
[Blippy]...allows people to link their credit cards and e-commerce accounts to its site, so those people can share with friends and strangers everything they buy — from dinner at a local restaurant to their cosmetic surgery.
A Providence, R.I., company has a similar idea. It’s called Swipely and is led by a veteran of Netscape and TellMe, Angus Davis. That site is still in private beta, so we can’t say how it will distinguish itself from Blippy, although Mr. Davis promises “a real service that my mom and millions of people can use every day to improve their lives.”
If customers start publishing their Amazon purchase history on sites like Blippy and Swipely, other retailers could peek at that data and take away Amazon’s edge. And if purchasing data indeed becomes portable across the Web, one day, a competitor like Wal-Mart could ask users if they want to import all their Amazon purchase data to generate better recommendations. Again, bad news for Amazon.
