One team turns a glowing tube of epoxy into a prototype for the next generation of lava lamps. Another rewires a Home Depot doorbell to send tweets, rather than ring. A third team wants to use Xbox to create a virtual dance floor.

And so it goes, at Providence's first-ever hardware hackathon, wherein dozens of geeks mash hardware (like a doorbell) and software (Twitter) into all manner of outlandish contraptions.

DiJiPOP acquired by Boston firm

DiJiPOP, a Providence-based startup whose flagship product is an on-demand shopper marketing technology platform, was acquired on Jan. 24.

Boston-based OwnerIQ, which targets ads based on products consumers already own, made an all-stock deal; the financial details were not disclosed.

Schilling to launch Amalur Monday

Curt Schilling, former Red Sox pitcher and founder of 38 Studios LLC, will be in Bellingham, Mass., on Feb. 6 as the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning goes on sale, The Boston Globe reported.

The game, published by Electronic Arts, is a fantasy role-playing game. A demo was released mid-January but was “riddled with software bugs,” the newspaper reported, noting that Schilling apologized in an online forum popular with serious gamers.

SyQwest lands defense contract

SyQwest Inc., supplier of high-resolution sonar and acoustic systems for sea floor exploration, landed Jan. 26 its fourth defense contract in two years.

“It’s nice to know business can still thrive in the Rhode Island area,” said Andrew Tarini, sales and marketing for SyQwest in an email.

Ex-Textron exec. to head Bryant’s info services

Bryant University has tapped a former executive of Textron for to head its information services department.

Chuck LoCurto took the reins in January as the university’s vice president for information services and chief information officer. He held a similar position, executive vice president and chief information officer, for Textron Financial Corp.

Slater Technology Fund issues call for fellowship applications

Funded as part of Rhode Island’s award from the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR), the Entrepreneurial Fellows Program provides fellowships at the Slater Technology Fund for graduate students and undergraduate students in their final year at institutions of higher education throughout the state. Eligible institutions include the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, Bryant University, the Community College of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, the Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University.

Marine-rescue firm turns to technology to stay afloat

Tablets have become an indispensible part of business for Safe/Sea marine rescue. The North Kingstown company is always on the lookout for technology innovations and utilizes iPads for everything from contacting their captains, to monitoring weather conditions and capturing a client’s signature at the end of a job.

In the past, “The captains would have to come in at the end of the shift with that piece of paper [bearing a client’s signature] and collate that with the printed case report,” said Pete Andrews, vice president, co-founder and minority owner of the company which began rescuing boats in Rhode Island waters in 1984 when the U.S. Coast Guard stopped providing free towing service in nonemergency situations.

Small businesses are RI's largest employer

Rhode Island small businesses represented 95.9 percent of all employers in the state in 2009, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The SBA’s Office of Advocacy released small business profiles for the 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories on Thursday.

WJAR parent reports 2011 losses

Media General Inc., the parent company of WJAR-TV NBC 10, widened its loss to $74.3 million in 2011 from a loss of $22.6 million in 2010. The loss per share totaled $3.31, more than tripling the 2010 loss per share of $1.01.

Revenue declined to $616.2 million for the year ended Dec. 25, compared with $678.1 million in 2010.

Hasbro signs lease on Providence office space

Pawtucket-based toy-maker Hasbro Inc. has finalized a lease for 135,908 square feet of office space at 15 LaSalle Square in downtown Providence, the company and owner of the building, Berkeley Investments of Boston, announced Thursday.

The new lease runs for 12 years, a news release said.

iPhone app allows Providence residents to report issues to the City

This afternoon I took a walk with Mayor Angel Taveras to try out the City’s new ProvConnex iPhone app (an Android app is in development).

The Mayor and I walked down Washington Street and he showed me how the app works on his iPhone. The Mayor’s Press Secretary, David Ortiz joined us and provided more details on the app.

Technology services company Rudnick Computer Consultants acquired an operational cost savings solutions firm.

Rudnick acquired Overview Inc. for an undisclosed price. It has taken on the founder and sole employee, Ben Hall, to its company.

Textron forecasts full-year profit that tops estimates

Textron Inc. forecast higher 2012 profit than analysts estimated as demand for its Cessna aircraft recovers and Bell helicopter sales grow.

Earnings from continuing operations excluding one-time items will be $1.80 a share to $2, the Providence-based company said in a statement Wednesday. The average of nine analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg was $1.67.

Towerstream posts SEC registration statement

Broadband service provider Towerstream Corp. filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Jan. 20 related to the stockholder sale of 1,015,723 shares of common stock.

Towerstream, trading as “TWER,” noted that the last reported sale price of its common stock Jan. 19 was $2.28 a share.
