About Me

What to say about myself (my least favorite topic)... I like good beer, I've somehow gotten myself into a little web design all because I said that I know HTML on my resume, I love Phish (and just about any other kind of music), and I try to advocate for good urbanism. I work in tech support and run the IT Helpdesk at Providence College, though my job entails a lot more than simply tech support (which is where the web design comes in). I just started blogging about things that interest me and I tend to be very opinionated. I have a large staff of student workers and they get me through each day (or sometimes make it longer). I live in Providence and hope to stay here for quite some time... I grew up in southern CT. I went to UConn where I got my BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. It was there that I had my first taste of Higher Ed. IT while working for ResNet, and that's how I ended up at PC.

At PC, we have used Robert Half to help us fill some temporary positions at the beginning of the school year.  I know they do all sorts of tech hiring.  They might be worth looking at.

I won't be buying an iPhone, I'm in a contract with Verizon until next summer (when I will be considering an iPhone), but I'm curious about the plans.  I'm having a hard time finding good information (you'd think they'd spell it out boldly for you about how much the plans cost).  AT&T says that the data plan will cost $30 on top of a "qualified" voice plan.  Does the cheapest voice plan (at $39.99) count or is that not "qualified"?

Also, for everyone curious, Apple's website say it'll go on sale on Friday at 8:00am.  Sounds like no midnight openings.

I read Slashdot and Boing Boing (and BB Gadgets and TV) religiously.  I watch Rocketboom daily on TivoCast (it's a blog, but I happen to see it on Tivo).  I read the Projo's Subterranean Homepage News and 7to7 Blog daily as well.  Every now and then I check out Gizmodo and Life Hacker and a few others.

That was bizarre.  I saw it clockwise and couldn't adjust by refocusing until I scrolled the page and it pause and then I saw it counter-clockwise.  Scrolled again, and back to clockwise.

Based on the reading I have done, Verizon has a practice of removing the copper to your home when they install the fiber, leaving you no option to switch to a different landline carrier (if you still have one) or to a DSL connection.  I use Cox for my phone service because it's cheaper (and I get a decent deal having all 3 services from them).  I don't know how I feel about having the copper ripped out leaving no choice for competition on the landline phone.  I also don't know how I feel about losing the option of a low cost broadband service, which is now their DSL (leaving Cox as the only provider for a low cost cable connection with their economy plans).  I would definitely need to read up on it before I'd consider making a switch to FiOS.
